What’s that Noise?

What’s That Noise? By Sam M. Raife

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry child, there is nothing wild, it can all be expertly explained.

It’s the Elephant-Mouse. Who lives in a tiny house, you’ll find it under the stairs.

At night it’s snore is long and pure, loud enough to scare away the bears.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry son, there is nothing fun, it can all be expertly explained.

The Backward-Giraffe is just having a laugh, watching air escape from its bum.

Its tail goes whoosh when its behind goes swoosh and it always has a rumbly tum.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry love, there’s nothing to speak of, it can all be expertly explained.

Under the bath, is a reptile that loves math, known as the purple-spotted calculus-crocodile.

He’s gargling water after brushing his molars, then counts every tooth in his smile.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry mate, it’s not something to hate, it can all be expertly explained.

Behind the fridge is a magic bridge, where the Pencilquins sing their song.

It’s a low hum, played on a long thin drum, and a bunch that keep saying “Ding-Dong”.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry bud, did you hear that thud? It can all be expertly explained.

There’s a big fat fish, whose tail goes swish, as he swims through the pipes.

When the radiator gets warm, it’s chubby fins start to perform as the heat is something it dislikes.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry about that, it wasn’t a bat. It can all be expertly explained.

It was the Super Flying-Rat, his cape goes tap-tap, as he soars around the house.

He keeps a watchful eye, and protects us from bad guys, whilst fighting evil Professor Grouse.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry flower, no need to cower. It can all be expertly explained.

It’s just the Smoth. She’s in the loft, floating, slowly through our roof beams.

She makes the odd clunk, routing through our junk, as she sleep-flys acting out dreams.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry pup, it’ll all add up. It can all be expertly explained.

It’s the blue lion-dog, barking like a frog. Warming itself by the fire.

It likes the crackle and heat, then engulfs its own feet to use them as a pacifier.

What’s that noise? What’s that noise? It’s making me a little afraid.

Don’t worry pumper, it was probably wasn’t thunder. It can all be expertly explained.

It’s just the dark gnomes, they’re having a moan, about the sudden lack of weeds.

During the day, the birds rustle and play. So at night, the gnomes plant lots more seeds.

A gnome? A mouse? A lion? A grouse? All living in spaces around our house?

A flying rat? A floating sloth-bat? And a giraffe that could stink out a warehouse?

You really want me to believe there is a strange magical bridge, with a bunch of penguins behind the fridge?

Or a croc watching the clock? I don’t believe it, not one smidge!

Sometimes bud the noise is just a thud. So you don’t always need to be afraid.

Now go to sleep, don’t make a peep, because those sounds can always be explained.

What’s That Noise? is inspired by the constant concerns and questions of an inquisitive three-year-old, who has been discovering sounds around the house. I think that this time can be quite difficult for many children as it often coincides with an overactive imagination, I felt that creating funny and almost unimaginably real characters to explain the noises would satisfy the hunger for that imagination to create something magical, rather than the mundane.
